How to discharge a high voltage ceramic capacitor!
The High-voltage ceramic capacitor is a disc capacitor. The shell is made of ceramic and used for insulation. One of the main features of the high-voltage capacitor is high withstanding voltage. Generally speaking, the voltage are larger than 1KV. The common voltages are 2KV, 3KV, 4KV.The highest voltage can up to 30KV. They are widely in high pressure occasions.
Before working on an appliance or electronic device, we must discharge the capacitor first.
To avoid burning the connections of the capacitors, the High-voltage capacitors are usually not discharged directly in short-circuit, we can use a suitable resistance, a lamp, electric iron, or a multi-meter to discharge. Here is a right way to discharge a capacitor safely.
First, unplug the power equipment. Using a 20,000 ohm, 2-watt resistor, connect the resistor’s probe to the high-voltage capacitor terminal to discharge.
Second .Connecting one terminal of the resistor to a test pen.the other terminal to a crocodile folder, wrapped the joins with insulated tape. The alligator clip is caught on the ground, and use a pen to pick up the other polar of the high-voltage capacitor, so there will be no spark discharge. It should be noted that if discharge many capacitors continuously, the resistor will heat up. So we should choose a resistor with larger wattage.
